Overview

In the past two weeks, the Ontario Legislature, House of Commons, and Senate all met. The calendar was as follows:

  • Senate: December 11-14
  • House of Commons: December 11-13
  • Ontario Legislature: December 11-14

The most noteworthy legislative event this week was the passage of Bill 74, the Cannabis Act. At Leaders in the Legislature, First Nations resolved to advocate for a delay in this legislation to enable communities to prepare for the impacts of legalized cannabis. Chiefs of Ontario made a submission at the committee stage, but the Bill was passed anyway.

The second major event was the passage and Royal Assent of Bill C-61, which gave effect to the Anishinabek Nation Education Agreement, making the legislative changes necessary to do so. More details on this are available here.

The Ontario Legislature has adjourned until February 20, 2018,  the Senate has adjourned until January 30, 2018, and the House of Commons has adjourned until January 29, 2018. The next update will be posted on February 12, 2018.
